StorkMusic

Thanks to Thuy Lan at StorkMusic for this:

"Jon White fronts a one-man band called If This Is a Man.  His digital album, Random Acts of Kindness Have Saved Lives, is now available on bandcamp.
White creates his songs in his makeshift bedroom recording studio, with “…Just me, a pretty battered electric guitar, an acoustic, a bass, piano and an incredibly noisy and slow computer.”  The mellow, complex layering of the tracks are somewhat reminiscent of an Imogen Heap, Pretty Lights and Bon Iver mashup.
At the age of seven or eight, White was captivated by an album called Morning Glory.  At the age of thirteen, the budding musician picked up a guitar and found piano a logical accompaniment.  White also muddled with drums, but says he never was quite so good with them.
The spacey, indie tunes are described by White as “a mix of genres really, slowcore, psychedelic, acoustic folk, electronica, melancholy, indie, 90′s jangley emo with slightly spacey vocals and lyrics.”  A prime example of the crossover genre is ‘Your Old Room.’  The single opens with a simple piano, soon accompanied by a raw, quieter set of vocals.  The piano intensifies deeper into the track, but slows to a set of beats near the middle, showing the complexity and layers of the album.
The lyricism of the unique tracks come from life experience, “I just write about ideas I have and feelings about relationships with people and concepts, they can be a bit philosophical sometimes and a bit romantic sometimes, sad sometimes, hopeful sometimes, it’s not all sort of focused with one aim. I never sort of sit down and go right, I’m gonna write a song about love, or feeling lost or whatever I just write what comes naturally,” says White.
Overall, the tracks off Random Acts of Kindness Have Saved Lives are undoubtedly original.  If This Is a Man offers an alternative soundtrack to your evening, a good record to wind down to.
You can listen to the album on bandcamp and get more information about If This Is a Man on FaceBook and follow his blog here."

Little update; recently started a new job at Keele so been a bit busy lately, not recorded for a while. Been working on some lyrics for some songs with Ali Ewing (Solarwind) coming together quite nicely, thinking about making just a mini 3 maybe 4 song EP to bring out in a couple of months, and then start work on the next If This Is A Man album. No idea what shape that's going to take yet, but I've got a nice shiny electric mandolin to play with so I'm sure there'll be plenty of that. Hope life is treating you kindly, and thanks for taking an interest.

Peace

Room Thirteen

Proud to be one of the unsigned picks of the month on Room Thirteen:

"Jon White aka If This Is A Man is a Staffordshire based singer songwriter and his new album was written, performed and recorded in a bedroom over this Summer. The record "Random Acts Of Kindness Have Saved Lives" is described by Jon as mixture of genres from slowcore through psychedelia and folk to electronic and shoegaze. The album is lovely and reminds us a little of Death Cab For Cutie. Check out his stuff at Bandcamp!

Check out Arks on the same review, some really good songs, quite Radioheady.

Binge Cringe Whinge

Cheers to Scott at BCW for the review:

"Year: 2011
Genre:
Folk, indie

Random Acts displays a flair for genre-hopping that caught me off guard. Towards the end of the sweet folky opening track Indelible, I was sucker punched when the climax roared in with a choir-like effect. I was wearing a smile when my head snapped back from the recoil though.

From there the album progresses very pleasingly, with the occasional lashing of wild ingredients. Thankfully, despite the electric guitar, the tribal percussions, the radio-style monolgue, the album never loosens its grip on its decidedly homey feel. You never feel too far from the foundation of the songwriting talent – warm acoustic guitar and earnest vocals."

The Indie Artist Podcast

Write up in The Indie Artist Podcast, the guys were also good enough to include me in their podcast, episode 5, which you can listen to here:

http://theindieartistpodcast.wordpress.com/2011/09/21/episode-five-god-gave-rock-and-roll-to-you/

"So when I write these things I do as much research as I can, I check the band’s facebook, they’re tumblr, maybe stalk a few tweets. I’ll read past interviews or even see what other reviewers thought…sometimes bands have all this stuff, sometimes I have to do more with less…while reading up on If This Is A Man, I stumbled across several review sites, but was disappointed to see they only really take the time to write 50-100 words on any given artist. They blurb it. So simple. So concise. And in the end people are still checking out the album’s blurbed on. Maybe I’m wasting everyone’s time with these long reviews, making more work out of a relatively simple concept…if I am I apologize…I suppose if you’re not into it though then you wouldn’t be here, so apology rescinded(except to Jon White of ITIAM, apologies for venting when I should be reviewing). But anyway, If This Is A Man marks The Indie Artist Podcast‘s first international submission, what a monumental occasion! The project is a solo endeavor of Jon White from Staffordshire, whose 8/9/11 release “Random Acts of Kindness Have Saved Lives” is a 9-song shoegaze/psycha/indie release, showcasing ethereal guitar work and White’s subtle vocal style. I really respect the fact that he performed and recorded the whole thing, I’ve done the lonesome bedroom recording thing, and there are definitely moments that make you feel like you’re slowly going crazy. White does well though, in creating a very distinct sound for himself. I think the vocals on the album, while setting him apart, could use a little work, not so much with the way he sings them but in the production; a little more volume, a little less effect. The foundation is there and I can see the dream-like quality of them, but I think they miss the mark just a bit. He also manages to incorporate a large mix of guitar/piano/bass/synth and software base instruments throughout the album, giving it a nice full feel, while staying musically engaging. This production method works perfectly on the track “Networking”, which replaces White’s vocals with samples from the 1976 film Network. The album is undeniably centered on a very specific production sensibility and at times I find myself wishing for a little more variety, but overall If This Is A Man is definitely worth a listen, and I’m interested to see what he does with his next album."

Polar Sunspots

Today's pick on Polar Sunspots:

"Dreamy, genre hopping release from England. Takes influence from various genres, including shoegaze, folk, psychedelica, slowcore and ambient. You can expect to hear some electronic elements too. If This Is A Man manages to do this whilst still remaining cohesive – no easy feat as you can probably guess! Really heartfelt and emotional album. Highly recommended."

Sethmol Album Review

Thanks to Ian Witzel for this review on Sethmol

"A somber reel of psychedelic guitar strings is cast into the pond of the soul. Tiny ripples break the surface and cascade outward, sending a solemn vibration to the senses. The sound waves lure positive organisms to the air and repel all negativity, creating a submerged cocoon of safety.
If This Is a Man are giving new definition to the word slowcore. They learned from the masters like Low and Red House Painters and added shoegaze influences to send us down a swirling vortex of beautiful sound. Subtle echos and kaleidoscopic guitar manipulations flutter about the brain, breaking the emotional dams we have built for ourselves. The vocals are soothing and consolatory but at times they become obtrusive and too present. When this happens a barrier is put between the mind and the music and you do not get the full experience.

Random Acts of Kindness Have Saved Lives
. The title is very fitting. This album is a bandage for the broken heart, a blanket for a frozen body. Listen to this when your soul is ready to scream and give up and somewhere among the guitar strums and piano strikes you will find the strength to keep going."

Networking Review

Review of Networking in Indie Music News:

Hello Independent Music readers/fans. I went on a bit of a rant the other day. Basically I really appreciate music when musicians spend so much time creating magical boxes of emotion. Then you get artists like Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black who work on segments of money making toblerone that the popular public indulge on. Well guess what? I don’t like toblerone or Justin Bieber…….that’s all I wanted to say; I feel like a preacher……hail mercy!

In other news – I got an email from a man that goes by the name of……If This Is A Man; sounds like a stunt double for James Bond – 011. Anyway I’m going to review his single – Networking – to try and entice people to log-out of Facebook and read this review; that’s as optimistic as George Bush running an ice-cream van, providing the masses with propaganda that his ice-cream is the best. That would probably happen. Before we begin, have a listen to the single….alright?

Networking – social deprivation. Listening to this track you would probably enjoy it more on a bike riding through the slums of democracy/UK. The track talks about society and how it has changed and developed into a ball of technology and ruined communication as a whole.  To be honest what he says is true and I’m left feeling quite annoyed. Wait a minute as I run outside and tell the world…………don’t worry I’m not that mental. What I should say is listen to the track while you’re on Facebook.

New Album

New album is now properly out for people to listen to. It's called Random Acts Of Kindness Have Saved Lives and you can stream it on the new Bandcamp here:

or preferably download it from Megaupload here. If you download it here you get the songs in full WAV files which have lost none of the sound quality that the files on bandcamp have, they really sound a lot clearer and I've also included a 14 page digital artwork in the folder with lyrics, pictures, credits etc. You can download it here:

www.megaupload.com/?d=ASVNQWM0

check the previous post for details on how to use Megaupload if you're unfamiliar.

Thanks

Megaupload - Beginner's Guide

If you haven't used Megaupload before it's really simple once you know how.

  • If you don't have it already you need to download WinRar (or another software for extracting/compressing files). It's a small, clean and free trial of a software which you can use to compress folders on your computer to make them easy to share online or just to free up space. Just search WinRar download on google.

Once the trials run out it will still work, it just asks you if you'd lke to buy the full version when you use it.
  • On the right hand side you will see an icon saying Premium Download (ignore this unless you are a member)
Below there is a timer
  • Wait for the timer to count down to 0 and an icon saying Regular Download will appear
A menu will pop asking if you want to save or open the file
  • Press Save and put it in a folder where you can find it easily eg Desktop
Once it has finished downloading go to the folder and you will see a Zip icon of the album
  • Right click on the icon and press 'Extract Files'
  • Chose where you want the album to be extracted to and wait for it to finish
You're done, full high quality wav files of all the songs on the album, artwork and lyrics all waiting on your computer ready to be added to ITunes or whatever software you use. or to burn to CD.

Hope that's helped clear things up a bit, if you can put up with the slightly annoying kid talking you through it, this video is actually a pretty comprehensive guide to how to do the things I've just mentioned:

Enjoy the album
Peace

Jon x

Watch The Tapes

Cheers to Billy at Watch The Tapes for this:

"A quiet waif of an album I found in my inbox. Random Acts of Kindness is an understated effort, and if you aren’t paying attention it will fly by your ears before you know you were listening to it. But when you do listen, it’s rewarding. If This is a Man clearly has a distinct vision for his music and it blends a variety of influences (shoegaze, electronica, psychedelia, ambient, singer-songwriter tunes) into coherence. It’s got a well-placed sample from the film Network too, so that nets it some points with me for sure. The whole album is free on Bandcamp for streaming and downloading, so check it out!"

Play Music Magazine

Just found out about a nice little review in July's edition of Play Music magazine which you can pick up for free in hundreds of guitar/music shops. You can find out where to get it here:

www.playmusicpickup.co.uk/stockists.php

"An excellent debut album from Jon White, under the moniker of If This Is A Man. Self-produced and featuring Jon on all instruments, this mixture of early 90's emo (think The Appleseed Cast, American Football), psychedelic outbursts and gentle piano playing is a well constructed, hazily flowing collection. The whole thing is an experimental and beautiful set of songs whose songwriting owes as much to Jon's individual tastes as to the bands and artists he sites as influences. He doesn't sound like any particular one, making There Is Hope In Small Things an accomplished and intriguing first foray for him."

RebelRiffs

Review from Rebel Riffs:

"If This Is A Man is one John White, a one man band who contacted me for a review of his latest project There Is Hope In Small Things; an eleven track CD. Like most musicians, John covered his request with a number of caveats; the most important being that it was 'recorded and produced at home so the quality is a little hit and miss' Well, mate almost 99% of what I get to review comes under that category but when you consider what our home computers are capable of these days, that still sets a pretty high standard. He was also kind enough to let me have the tracks as full blooded WAV files, and if that isn't close to the recorded event then nothing is. No MP3 delivers the same aural quality.

Whatever you may think about the music and songs stylistically, there is no doubt that this guy spent a whole lot of time and patience putting all this together. I don't think most people would notice the technical bumps and flubs, but to my ears they are there (especially vocally) but that's home recording for you. I was writing in a review lately about how being indie musicians allows us to stretch ourselves further than (say) commercial music, the time and cost is irrelevant. If This Is A Man exemplifies this because I admit that I haven't come across much guitar based music that is as adventurous with sound as this CD. While the slow, very laid back style wouldn't normally catch my attention, the way John presents them to your ears ensure that you will listen just to see what he'll do next.

Musically this veers from influences such as Mike Oldfield (for the way it put together), old style singer/songwriters like Syd Barrett and Terry Reid to Soft Machine. So, being different, and somewhat off the beaten track, this may not appeal to everybody but it appeals to me because of that difference. No matter what kind of music you do these days, you can bet that it has been done before, all you can hope to do is put a new slant on it, and If This Is A Man has certainly achieved that. Every track on this CD shows a different side of what essentially guitar driven songs, and when you are that limited, its doubly hard to hold attention. A fine job, but try a track and see first.

Recommended (intelligent) guitar songs."

Studio

Been in the recording studio proper with Joe Robson (The Luckiest www.myspace.com/theluckiestmusic) and Ali Ewing (Solarwind - www.myspace.com/solarwindmusic) working on a new track, not sure what name it's going to be released under but probably not If This Is A Man as this is a solo endeavour, but musically it's not a million miles away. All the guitar parts, drums, piano, bass and even mandolin and banjo parts are finished, just need to write and record the vocal parts and let Ali work his magic on the production. Will put the track up on here when it's finished for a free download, might even try and make a little video for it and stick it on YouTube maybe. I'll keep you posted.

Interview

Interview with It's Pyschedelic Baby:

http://psychedelicbaby.blogspot.com/2011/06/if-this-is-man-interview.html

1. Thank you very much for agreeing to do this interview! When and where was If This Is A Man born?

In a bedroom in the middle of England.

2. Why do you write?

I think it's the best way that I know how to express myself, with music you can take your feelings, your emotions, everything and anything you feel and experience and you can try to sort of distill that into a sound. It's just a way of communicating, of saying this is our world and this is how I'm interpreting it and sharing that feeling and hoping other people feel it too.

3. Why the name If This Is A Man?

Most of the music that I'd recorded before this album I put out under my own name and it was quite sparse, mainly just live takes of acoustic guitars and vocals and I wanted to try and expand a little and incorporate more instruments and layers of sounds. I guess that's why I wanted to adopt a new name for this project really. If This Is A Man was the book I was reading when I first put my music up on Myspace and Jon White was taken so I went with that. When I was trying to come up with a name it just kept coming back to me, I think it's quite a powerful phrase that's a little open-ended, open to interpretation and I like that.

4. What are some of your influences?

Musically I've been inspired by a whole range of different artists, I think OK Computer by Radiohead was a massive influence on me growing up, with that mixture of the dark and ethereal with the majestic and beautiful. I'm really into a lot of 60's music, especially The Beatles and John Lennon in particular, his songs are so well crafted and arranged I think they set down the foundations that most of my favourite artists have built upon. Recently I got into shoegaze, bands like Ride, My Bloody Valentine and the first Brian Jonestown Massacre album, I think the style of the production struck a chord with me, the sort of swirling wall of textures and almost hidden melodies you have to listen to a few times before they jump out at you. I have a softspot for music that's layered and produced in a way that makes it sound better on headphones. I like to put in elements of electronica aswell I think a big influence was listening to the UNKLE album Psyience Fiction and the mixture of indie and electronica, that got me into DJ Shadow. Oh and Daniel Johnston is wicked.

5. Were you in other bands before forming If This Is A Man?

Yeah I was in a band in high school we started out covering Oasis songs and pretty much followed along that vein with the songs we were writing. We had a good time, and played a few gigs locally with some cool bands but we were never really that good. Whilst I was at college I started writing with my friend Joe and we made some pretty nice lo-fi piano and acoustic guitar songs and I think we both learned musically from eachother, we were both really into Counting Crows and that came through in our writing. It was all kind of tender and melancholy and it's still an element of how I write now.

6. You have an album out called There Is Hope In Small Things. Can you present us your new album (how do you feel about it, how it was produced and recorded etc.)?

I recorded and produced it myself at home playing in the guitar, piano and bass parts and then added the other elements using Reason and Wavelab. Music software opened up a new world for me, it enabled me to add all sorts of synths and drums, to make backwards guitar parts which are quite a big feature on the album, and the ability to mix the sounds together and layer them has been really important.

7. Would you also mind telling us about the songs themselves. If you can share a few words about the songs on the album? I really dig Into The Wind and Lazarus!

Into The Wind, along with Comes and Goes, was one of those nice moments where the songs pretty much write themselves, I was just playing around on guitar and stumbled upon the chord patterns and it just felt really natural. The vocal melody came really quickly sometimes the lyrics take a bit longer to work out. I think Lazarus is quite a good introduction to the album, the sample is from Sylvia Plath reading her poem Lady Lazarus that was cut up and edited a little to fit around the music. It's pretty dark subject matter but how honest she is and how she evokes and articulates her world to you is breathtaking. I'm happy with how the album turned out I think that the more chaotic moments like Seek The Truth and the end of Whispers came out as I imagined them when they first popped into my head. I like the idea of structuring an album so it kind of ebbs and flows, I wanted to have some shorter instrumental tracks to blend between heavy and soft to try to bring the record together cos there are some quite different styles. All in all I'm pleased with it and I just hope that someone out there might really get it.

8. How about your future plans for If This Is A Man?

I'm working on the next album at the moment, it's still relatively early days but it's starting to shape up pretty nicely. I just want to keep developing ideas really.

9. What is your opinion about the psychedelic scene these days?

For whatever reasons I seem to find increasingly most of the music I really get into was made in the 60's or 90's, but if you're looking for it there's still some amazing psychedelic music coming out at the moment. I've just started listening to Film School and The Early Years who I stumbled across on Youtube who are both kind of moody, shoegazey, psychedelica with some Krautrock influences. I think The Brian Jonestown Massacre really embody the 60's psychedelic sound and manage to still sound totally modern, and their most recent work has got even more far-out and they're encorporating totally different genres, but it still has the mind-expanding essence of pyschedelica, highly recommended.

10. Thank you very much for your time and effort. Do you have anything else to say about yourself, that I didn't ask?

Just to say thanks for the support, it's appreciated.

Raamb Recordings Review

Recieved a nice review from the good people over at Raamb Recordings, an independent record label and music blog based around Staffordshire. Check out some of their other recommendations (especially Leaving Nebraska who could become fantastic, and Hello Big World) and keep abreast of their releases and reviews here: Raamb-Recordings.co.uk

There Is Hope In Small Things

"One of the things that most annoys me about the Stoke music scene, is the fact that there are many musicians out there, making great music, who seem to be completely ignored. I'm not sure of the exact reason. I'm not sure why we have an abundance of mediocre lad rock bands, who seem to be the 'be all and end all' of Stoke. What I am sure of though, is that if you delve deep enough, you'll find some truly outstanding musical talent.

Introducing Jon White: the guy who writes music for If This Is A Man, and the guy you've never heard of.

I first stumbled upon Jon's music a couple years back, and have been keeping an eye out for new songs, updates and general happenings since then. And to be fair, there wasn't too much action taking place as far as I could see, and I had just about lost interest. Luckily though, although it seemed he wasn't, Jon was indeed working hard on new material, and he sent me his new album a couple months ago - and I'm really glad he did.

All it takes is the first song from There Is Hope In Small Things, to realise that If This Is A Man deserves plenty of attention from the music lovers of Stoke. The samples from poem 'Lady Lazarus' by Sylvia Plath fit so well with track one, aptly named 'Lazarus', it's hard to believe they were recorded decades apart. It's a fantastic introduction to the album, and a great lead into track two 'Believe', which is where Jon's vocals kick in, which I can only describe as some sort of Ben Gibbard/Elliott Smith hybrid.

I really like the whispery vocal style throughout the album, which is sometimes skewed and pulled by vocal effects, creating a mysterious, and submerged like sound. And it's quite clear to realise that all instruments here have been worked on, and all instruments have been considered. There's not just distorted guitars; there's all kinds of sounds and instruments, layered upon each other, and when you consider this is a one man project, you can't help but feel impressed.

After quite a few listens, it's hard for me to pick out a stand out track. I've been going about my business all week and various If This Is A Man songs keep appearing in my head - which is a great indication to how good this album is. If I had to pick one though, it'd have to be title track 'There Is Hope In Small Things', simply because this track shows you both sides of the album, starting off with some beautiful sounding piano and vocals, which halfway through become accompanied by electronic beats (which are pure gorgeous!) before erupting into a synth driven frenzy.

This is an extremely well crafted album that flickers between real instruments and electronic effects flawlessly, and flows from beginning to end like any good album should. I also have to mention the intervals and shorter instrumental songs scattered throughout, which I am personally am a massive fan of - it seems to help the album flow graciously, and makes things so much more interesting.

I hope that people reading this will venture to If This Is A Man's site and have a listen. I also hope that the lesser known musicians of this city will someday be at the forefront of the scene, as they deservedly should be.

Jake Carter "
